A GREAT START TO THE SEASON FOR THE 15U BOYS

The boys competed in their first tournament this past weekend. Not only was the Provincial Cup their first tournament but it was the first OVA tournament for some of our team.

The boys are a very tightly knit group and get along very well, especially on the court. The boys came out with a very strong start taking care of their first two opponents, the Preds and Ballhawks, in two straight sets. They were able to finish 2nd in their pool, therefore able to be re-pooled among some of the top teams in their division. As the day went on fatigue sent in and the boys fell short against the Niagara Rapids and London FC. Despite the losses the boys showed great tenacity and grit throughout the day.

SOME MOMENTS OF GREATNESS:

  • Ryan's roof block on Chatham's 6'2" big hitter.
  • Johnny's 14 straight serves in one set.
  • Tournament MVP to Luke Hagedorn for strong passing and numerous kills.
  • Special recognition the the parents who came to support our Tigers and to Iris Cloutier for being a very dependable lines person.

UPS AND DOWNS FOR THE 15U BOYS

On Saturday Jan 17th The Waterloo Tigers 15U Boys competed in their 2nd tournament of the season. The boys started slow but as the day progressed so did the game play of the boys. The tournament was held in Cambridge at St. Benedict’s CSS.

In pool play the boys competed against Mississauga Pakmen in their first game. The boys didn’t have the start they wanted but fought hard throughout the match. The boys dropped the first match in a 3 set thriller 16-25, 25-19, 15-5. In the 2nd match of pool play the boys had to face the defending Ontario Champs, Scarborough Crush. The Tigers once again started slow but this scrappy team still had a lot of fight in them. They lost the first set 13-25 but really dug deep in the second set and came out gunning. We took the second set from them 25-15. The boys’ fight didn’t last in the third set unfortunately and once again came up short 3-15.

In the 1st playoff round the boys were paired against a tough London FC team. Already playing two three set matches they boys seemed to be fatigued and lost 22-25, 16-25. In the 2nd playoff round and the boys’ fourth game in a row they played Durham Attack. Despite the losses the Tigers kept grinding it out and found their stride. They played and very tight, hard fought 3 set match and took down Durham 25-19, 28-30, 15-10. This match was a tough battle and seemed to spark life into the boys to set them up for a rematch against Mississauga Pakmen. Once again the boys found themselves in yet another 3 set slug fest. With the first game of the day on their minds the boys knew they had to strike first, strike hard, strike fast and that’s just what they did to gain victory in the first set 25-20. Pakmen stole the second set from us 12-25. In close third set the boys gave up an early lead to the very determined Pakmen squad but our Tigers weren’t going to let this one get away. Being down at the change the boys battled to take the third set 15-11.

The Waterloo Tigers learned a lot from this competition and knows now what it takes to compete among the best of Ontario.

Player of the Tournament honours goes to Nate Wilhelm for making 100% of his serves.

TOUGH DAY FOR 15U BOYS BLACK!

This past Saturday the 15U Boys Black Tigers participated in the Challenge Cup held in Chatham Ontario. This was a tough day for the boys that started out as a day with promise.

The boys finished second in their pool heading into the crossover match. After an unfortunate come-from-behind victory in both sets by the opposing team the 15U Tigers found themselves fighting to stay in the Premier Division for the next tournament.

Unfortunately, the boys lost a 3 setter which dropped them down to the Championship Division.

The boys have vowed to work harder and are determined for the Gold Medal in their next tournament to move back up where they know they belong.

Tourney MVP to Joel Nikkel for the only consistent player of the day.

15U Boys Bugarski Cup Bronze Medal Result

On the 28th of February our 15U boys travelled to Hamilton to compete in the last OVA tournament before Provincial Championships, the Bugarski Cup. They started the day two players short nursing injuries. With a short bench we knew it was going to be a challenging day.

The first game was against SCV Cyclone of Mississauga. We came out a gunnin’! This focus and mentality set the trend for the day. The boys took care of the in two straight sets, 25-15 and 25-14. Next our Tigers faced a familiar 15U Predators team. The boys didn’t let off the gas pedal and came out on top again in two straight sets.

This resulted in a 1st place finish in pool A.

After receiving a bye in the first playoff round, the determined Tigers found themselves in a quarter final match against a young but talented 14U Predators team. However, being older, bigger and stronger our Waterloo Tigers overwhelmed the younger Predators and headed to the semi-finals. In the Semis the boys probably played their best game of the tournament. They played a very consistent, tough and determined MAC team and unfortunately were downed and therefore placed in a fight for third place and the Bronze medal. In the Bronze medal game the Tigers were still a little shaken from the only loss of the day and as the game went on started to find their stride again and ended the day the way it started, with a bang. We won the match in three sets versus Pegasus Smash of Kingston 26-24, 22-25, 15-11.

The coaches would like to congratulate the boys for a well earned medal.

MVP of the tournament goes to Ilija Lukic for a strong offensive presence from the left side and stepping up his game throughout the day.

15U Boys Jump up in Ranking at 2009 Provincials

The Boys 15u Waterloo Tigers had their last OVA tournament of the season this past long weekend, The Ontario Provincial Championships held at RIM Park. The competition was a tough three days long but what an exciting tournament!

DAY 1:

The boys were seeded 12th going into the competition and placed in a tough pool that included 2nd seed Aurora Storm, 9th seed Chatham Ballhawks and 19th seed Kingston Pegasus. The boys opened the day play their first game against and talented Ballhawks team. The match went to three sets and with hard work the boys came out on top. The Second game had them matched up with one of the favourites to win the tournament, the Aurora Storm. They tried but were out gunned....needless to say they were even more determined. After a long break the boys faced Pegasus Smash of Kingston and were back on the winning side. Finishing 2nd in the pool the boys were among the best of Ontario and were placed in Tier 1.

DAY 2:

The second day didn’t “go as planned” is the best way to put it, losing 2 really tough fought 3-set matches against the Niagara Rapids and Mississauga Pakmen the boys were drained physically, mentally and emotionally. This set them up to lose 2 more matches against the Ottawa Kangaroos and Scarborough Crush.

DAY 3:

With a bad day 2, the boys showed up day 3 with a new attitude and determination. This day was a very exciting day and the boys came out runnin’ and gunnin’. Finishing last in day 2 in their pool this meant they had to play an extra game before the quarter-finals. They dominated the ACTS Elites and put them out in 2 sets. In the quarter-finals they were matched up against Scarborough Crush. The boys fought but it was not to be, they lost the eventual Champions.

The boys finished the tournament Tied for 5th in the Province. The Coaches and Team is very pleased with the end result finishing higher than they were seeded. Congratulations to Team Captain Gabe Richard whom the team picked for our Award of Excellence and for being MVP of this tournament.
