We went into this tournament shorthanded as three of our players had other commitments they needed to attend to. We played very strongly to start the day and won all three of our pool play matches to secure first in our pool and a chance to play the top teams from the other two pools.
As the day wore on, fatigue began to set in and this showed through in our final matches. Overall, however, the team showed a lot of versatility as players were asked to try positions they don't regularly play.
The team also demonstrated they intend to make a splash in Tier I when the competitive tournaments start in earnest.
Player of the tournament honours go to rookie Erich Woolley (Mammoth) for his solid passing and blocking.
We're also hoping for the speedy recoveries of Eric Wagner and Paul Anderson who are nursing injuries.
Look out for Tigers Black when they play up a year and a net height at the 17U Provincial Cup at Forest Heights on December 13th.
Coach John
The day started off with a bang as we upset the #2 seed (and eventual Gold medalists) Crush in straight sets. Riding this momentum, we continued to defy our #7 seed by defeating #3 Riverside in similar fashion.
The boys then had a showdown for first in the pool with MAC and were narrowly edged out of the top spot. Next up was a quarterfinal match against Storm Thunder with the winner guaranteed a crack at a medal and the loser fighting for their Premier Division life in the relegation round. Despite a brief loss of composure in the second set, our team overcame adversity and moved onto the medal round.
We met the #1 seeded Pakmen in the semifinals and lost a nail biter.
After a tough loss, a lesser team might have packed it in and called it a day. Not this team, however, as we still had plans to bring home some hardware. That's exactly what we did in the bronze medal match, taking Northumberland Breakers in straight sets.
This tournament was a big success for the team, medaling for the first time in the top division. The prestigious John's Tiger of the Tournament Award goes to Ben Nikkel for his astronomical kill percentage.
The real story here, however, was an excellent overall team game. The boys play was a poignant example of the success that can be had when you put forward a fantastic group effort.

The quality of our play on February 7th was like the size of a
snowball rolling down a hill, slowly increasing. Unfortunately, we
found our game too late to have any chance at a medal.
Fortunately, we found our game soon enough to knock off a disheartened Forest City squad, thus avoiding relegation to the Championship division. There weren't a lot of high points to speak of from our day, so I'll give
the Tiger of the Tournament award to coach Owen Jones for not blowing
a gasket when times got tough.
Rest assured we'll be back at the gym shortly, working hard and preparing for our next tournament in Hamilton on February 21st.

This tournament was exactly what our team needed to get back on track
and begin peaking for provincials.
Our team's play was solid throughout the day and we saw important contributions from every player on the team. The 5th place result does not speak to how well the team played, having lost only once in a quarterfinal barn-burner.
The highlight of the day was, without a doubt, the second contact save Sean Roberts made in our final match against Pakmen. Playing libero, Sean tracked down an errant dig looping high towards the end wall. He jumped up against the wall with one fist high in the air, a la Superman, and saved the ball at the last possible moment. We got the ball back over the net and went on to win the point.
For this amazing feat of athletic prowess, the prestigious John's Tiger of the Tournament award has been bestowed upon him.
The 16U Boys Black team can hold their heads up high after this past weekend’s MAC Invitational in Hamilton. The team played solid volleyball to end placed second only to the Durham Attack team who finished in first.
