Congratulations to the following for being selected to the WCSSAA ALL-STAR teams:
17U McGregor Cup Premier
Boys Bring Home The Silver!!! After a bronze medal showing in the last tournament the boys came out with their eyes on the gold. Seeded 3rd in the province they had a tough pool ahead of them to accomplish this goal. The first match of the day was against the breakers and the early morning wake up call and drive seemed to be still effecting them when the hit the court. They played well but came up short in 2 straight sets 25-27 and 19-25. The day wasn’t going to get any easier with their next opponent being the forest city blue. Much better communication and team play on the court led them to a straight sets win with scores of 25-18 in both sets. To end pool play the tigers had to play the 2nd seeded durham attack. This match went back and forth in each of the three sets and the tigers came up short in the end 22-25, 25-23 and 7-15. The tigers were sitting 3rd after pool play and it was now time to step up their game in the playoffs if they wanted any chance of bring home a medal. The quarter-final game was to be against the newly created thunderbolts 93 team and the boys knew they had to step it up and that they did, winning in 2 straight sets 25-16 and 25-12. It seemed everything was clicking now and they were guaranteed top 4. They were anxious to get the semi-final underway with the momentum now going their way. It was the breakers they would have to face once again and they were determined to make it to the gold medal match. The boys left everything on the court in the semi-final game. The boys were blocking everthing in sight, hitting down the line and across court at every opportunity. After all was said and done they now found themselves in the gold medal match with a straight set victory with scores of 25-16 and 27-25. The gold match would see them go up against crush, the #1 ranked team in the province. After playing the semi-final match the boys had little left in the tank but were determined to put forth a great effort in order to win gold. The first set went to crush 25-16 and in the 2nd set the boys found themselves down 24-17 but scratched their way back to tie the match, only to lose 26-24 and capture silver. A well deserved medal for their tremendous play and determination. R. Wagner

3 For 3 For U17 Boys-Premier Division
Challenge Cup-Premiere Feb. 13, 2010 We knew before we even arrived in Cobourg that with only 2 gyms and 8 teams it was going to be a long day, but never expected to be there for 12 ½ hours. The boys learned early that they had to step up their game today because 2 of their players had injured their ankles and were unable to play. From the start of the day, the boys seemed to give a little bit extra in every match they played. First, they took care of the forest city blue in 2 straight sets and then Niagara rapids in 3. The final pool play game didn’t start until 4:30 but the boys were prepared and downed the thunderbolts in 3 sets to be first in their pool. In the quarters we played the Etobicoke wildcats, a team unfamiliar to us and the boys made quick work of them in 2 straight sets. The quarterfinals once again saw us up against the Breakers, the team they beat last tournament to get to the gold medal game. The boys were really starting to show the fatigue of playing with 2 less team mates all day. This still didn’t stop them as they dug deep and pulled out enough energy to beat them in 3 sets to advance to the gold medal match. One last game to play against the Ottawa Mavericks for gold. Was there enough left in the tank to pull off another victory. The first set goes to us, one more set to clinch it. The second set, the Mavericks come out on fire and win quite handily. It will be a 3rd set to determine the winner today and it is already 9:15 p.m. only one set left to give everything they have left (which isn’t too much right now) and win the gold. At the split, the boys were up 8-6 and then it seemed that everything was going Ottawa’s way. Before we know it we are down 14-8 but the boys come all the way back and make it 14-13. They gave everything they had today match after match, playing the final game on nothing but adrenaline but it was not meant to be today and the Mavericks secured the gold with the final point in the set. Congratulations go out to these boys for stepping up their game play and digging deep to continue fight until the very end!! VERY IMPRESSIVE GENTLEMEN!! R.Wagner

Boys make it 4 medals in 4 tournamentsThe final tournament before the Provincials was held Saturday March 6th on home court at Forest Heights. Going into this tournament the boys were ranked 2nd in the province and wanted another piece of hardware to add to their collection. The day started out with a match against the Ottawa Fusion who moved to Premiere for the first time after winning their Championship division the last tournament. It was a hard fought 3 set battle with the Tigers winning 25-16 19-25 and 15-11. The next match had them against yet another Ottawa team, this time it was the Maverick Desperados whom they played in Cobourg 3 weeks ago for gold and came up short. Again it was a 3 set match with the Mavericks winning 20-25 25-19 and 11-15. Things didn’t seem to be clicking quite as well this tournament as in the past but it started to show signs of improvement against the Durham Attack in the final pool play match. For the first time in 3 years, the Tigers beat the Attack with great court coverage and overall better play with scores of 25-21 and 26-24. This win secured 2nd place in pool play and now it was off to the quarter finals against the Forest City Green. Once again, the Tigers fought hard to pull out a 3 set match to guarantee a spot in the semi finals with scores of 16-25 25-21 and 15-9. This win now put them up against Crush, the #1 team in the province. The boys played very well, but came up short in the end 21-25 and 20-25. The loss put them in the Bronze medal game and they would have to play the only team that beat them in pool play again, the Mavericks. Both teams were showing signs of exhaustion and fatigue but the Tiger’s dug deep to secure the Bronze with yet another 3 set match winning 18-25 25-21 and 15-12. Although it was not the best outing for the boys, they still managed to fight their way to a medal. Congratulations on earning 4 medals in 4 tournaments!!! R. Wagner
17U Boys Waterloo Warriors OVA Invitational
Chris Lawson held an invitation only tournament on Saturday April 24th for select 18U and 17U teams from the OVA and Rochester, New York. This invitational was the last tune-up tournament for the 17U Tigers Black boys. Seeded 2nd in pool B the boys would play 4 pool games and 1 cross-over game and the top 2 teams from each pool would go to playoffs for the chance to win a medal. The morning started with the first match against a familiar Forest City Green 17U team and the boys won 25-11 and 25-18. The second match was against arch-rival MAC 17U and they were out to beat us at any cost and came up short with the Tigers winning 27-25 and 26-24. Next up were the Guelph Grizzlies 18U and the boys again won 25-17 in both sets. They boys were playing very well and holding their own against the much bigger and older teams. The cross-over game which didn't account for points in their pool was against MAC 18U and the boys split the 2 sets 25-21 and 22-25. The boys were showing they could compete with the older age group and be competitive. The biggest test would come in their final pool play game against Crush 18U, the #1 ranked team in the province. This game would also see who would be first in the pool since neither team had lost any games within their pool. This was a huge task to beat Crush and the Tigers fell short 15-25 both sets, giving them 2nd in the pool and a chance at a medal. In order to win the Bronze the Tigers would have to find a way to beat the Crush 18U boys. Crush had lost in 3 sets to the Bootleggers and apparently this was the first time they had ever lost a match all year. The Tigers were ready to play Crush when at the last minute it was found that Crush would forfeit the game because they didn't want anyone getting hurt for the upcoming Ontario Championships being held next weekend. This turn of events left the Tigers no one to play and the Bronze medal because of default. Congratulations boys, you held your own against the competition and played very well. It's not the way you want to win a medal, but that's 5 medals for 5 tournaments!! 17U/18U Canadian Nationals Abbotsford BC
Waterloo Tigers Black 17U Boys 4th Overall In The Country!!
This past weekend the 17U boys travelled to Abbotsford B.C. to compete in the Canadian Nationals. Going in the boys were ranked 4th and they knew that the competition would be fierce from start to finish. Friday’s pool play had them go 3-0 with wins over Park (Alberta), Storm Thunder (Aurora) and FVVC Blue (B.C.). This gave them 1st in their pool for the preliminaries and put them into the Tier 1-2 pool for Saturday’s Power Pools. Saturday was a long day for everyone and the last game didn’t finish until 11:30 pm. The tigers went 2-1 on the day with wins over the Vernon Venom (B.C.) and the Creston Barbarians (B.C.). Their final game of the day was against the Ottawa Mavericks which they had played often throughout the year and fell short in 2 straight sets. This gave the Tigers 2nd in their pool in Tier 1 and because of this they had to play the extra game in playoffs Sunday morning for a chance to go the quarter finals. Sunday was an early morning for the boys and they had to be on top of their game to win and give them a chance to play for a medal. The pre-quarter game had them up against the CKVAC Kings (Alberta) and they took the match in straight sets 25-23 and 25-21. Making it to the quarter finals, they now found themselves with a must win situation to get into the semis and keep their chances of gold in sight. Their opponent would be the last year’s gold medal champions, the NAVC Green Bears from Alberta. It was a hard fought battle with the Tigers on the winning side defeating them 29-27 and 25-23. They were now in the semis and had made it to top 4 in the country with a chance to win a medal. Three out of the four teams in the semis were from Ontario and the boys had to play one of them, the Durham Attack. The late night Saturday and then the early rising on Sunday morning seemed to take some steam out of the boys, but they weren’t going down easy. In the end they eventually lost, but not without a fight 26-28 and 20-25. They still had a chance for bronze but they would have to beat the Selkirk Royals from Manitoba. The boys played hard but fell short 15-25 and 20-25. The boys were disappointed for not getting a medal, but they played with heart and determination every match and never gave up. Hold Your Heads High Boys ………..You Have Every Reason to be Proud ………You’re # 4 In The Country!!!! On behalf of the parents we would like to thank you all for a year of excellent and exciting volleyball and are grateful to have shared your accomplishments. It was amazing to see how you have grown throughout the year, not only as a team but individuals. You’ve made us all proud !!
Tigers Achieve Gold Medal Hatrick at 2010 Ontario Championships
17U Boys Provincial Championships
Tigers Boys 17U Black are the Provincial Champs!!!!
Just a few come to mind…..AMAZING, EXCITING, OUTSTANDING, SENSATIONAL AND SUCCESSFUL. From the onset of this season, both the coaches and boys had one thing on their mind and that was to capture Gold at Provincials. Nothing would stand in their way to accomplish this goal. Tournament after tournament these boys improved so much and brought home a medal each and every time, but one colour was missing….gold. Seeded 3rd going into the Ontario Championships, these boys were ready to do whatever it took to accomplish their goal. The Power Pool on Saturday morning had the boys play Storm Thunder first thing. It was a battle taking the game in three hard fought sets. Next were the Thunderbolts who the boys handled in two straight sets. The two toughest battles were yet to come with Forest City Green and Durham Attack to end the day. The Tigers beat Forest City in a three set battle and finished the day beating the Durham Attack in straight sets to once again place 1st in their pool. The 1st place finish in the Power Pool sent them directly to the Quarters where they would meet the Ottawa Fusion. The Tigers made quick work of this game and sent them packing with a straight sets victory. The win guaranteed the boys a top four in the province and only one team stood in their way to make it to the gold medal game. It would be Forest City Green that they would play again, and it was no different from the playing them the day before. The semi final would be a back and forth battle and again went three sets to determine the winner. In the end it was the Tigers who would be playing for gold. The opponent for the gold medal game would be a surprising MAC team who just beat the 1st ranked Crush in their semi-final. After coming from behind in the first set and making it a close match, the Tigers found themselves down one set with all the momentum on the side of MAC. It was crunch time and the boys dug deep and pulled out a victory to force a final and deciding set, and just like that, the momentum changed sides, and the boys took the energy into the last set and came up big to clinch the title (PROVINCIAL CHAMPS) that they strived for all year. Every game a different player stepped up, yet as a team, the boys played the most solid volleyball of the season going 10-0 for the tournament. Yes, at times they were down but it was their determination and guts that rose to the top every time and they proved that hard work pays off in the end and they weren’t going down without a fight. Thank you Dave and Owen for your great coaching and bringing out the best in our boys every game. Thank you parents and families for all your support throughout the year In addition, a special thank you to Chris Lawson for his support and help with the boys for the past month, it really stepped up their game. CONGRATULATIONS GENTLEMEN YOU ARE #1 IN ONTARIO AND GOOD LUCK AT NATIONALS!!!! R. WAGNER
