14U Girls Black Place 4th

Congratulations on your 4th place finish out of 12 teams at the November 14th weekend Predators Invitational 14U tournament.  I was hoping for a top 6 finish so you exceeded my expectations.  Way to go!  Too bad we ran out of gas in the bronze medal match.  It was a learning experience for all and most athletes got lots of playing time.  Now we know what to work on and how good we need to be to beat Scarborough Titans who went on to win 1st place overall.

Here are our results:

London Forest City        16-25   25-13

Windsor South County   19-25   19-25

Preds 13U                      25-12   25-15

Tigers Red 14U              25-23   25-15

Leaside Lightning            29-27   26-16

Scarborough Titans         22-25   15-25

Windsor South County    11-25   22-25

Bronze Medal finish behind Woodstock and MAC

In their second tournament of the season, the Waterloo Tigers 14U Black showed their "teeth", skill, determination and teamwork capturing the Bronze Medal in OVA tournament play.

The Tigers came out strong, defeating the Royal City Ravens, and Halton Hurricanes 14U Blue in straight sets to earn a first place ranking in their pool and a bye to the quarter-finals where they defeated Halton Hurricanes 13U Black is straight sets.  In the semi-final match, the Tigers met the Woodstock Warriors (tournament Gold Medallists) losing a heart-stopping split match 25-23, 20-25 and 10-15.  This caused a bronze medal rematch against Halton Hurricanes 14U Blue where the Tigers defeated Halton in two straight sets 25-20 and 25-23!

Congratulations Tigers, and Coaches Terry Hinschberger and Airianna Mapp on a great start to the season!

Girls 14U Black McGregor Cup

This weekend, Tigers Black competed in the Ontario McGregor Cup in Etobicoke.  Despite the unfortunate benching of injured player Daniela Salazar, the wrist injury of Rachel Maidment, and the unexpected illness of middle player Sydney Gruelich, the Tigers came out strong, achieving a first place finish in their pool as they defeated Niagara Rapids Black in straight sets 25-17;  25-20 and Woodstock Warriors in split sets 23-25;  26-24.

Angela Mercurio showed why she is a world class high jumper, as she consistently sailed above the net to block the power hits of our opponents, while Lauren Hinschberger, Larissa Magnus, Karis Mapp, Gabby Dozois and Princess Maranan had impressive offensive serves.

However, as fate would have it, the flu hit the team fully in the afternoon.  Gabby Dozois, after serving seven straight points, had to make an emergency departure during the South County Teal Bandits due to illness, with Ellen McGowen, Princess Maranan, and Karis Mapp also succumbing to flu symptoms.  With a loss to South County Teal Bandits in split sets, 19-25; 26-24 and 11-15, the Tigers had to battle it out with the Chatham Ballhawks.

Despite the injuries, and illness, the girls showed tremendous heart, courage and commitment to the team.  Our newest team member, Ashna Binning chased down balls to make some impressive saves.  Rachel Maidment, Sydney Greulich, Ashna Binning, and Ellen McGowen stretched out of their comfort zone to successfully serve overhand serves in competition! In the final game, the girls affectionately called the 'small girls' showed their heart and quick feet, moving as a team, anticipating ball placement and running down balls.  Throughout the day, when the Tiger's passing, setting and hitting were in place, the team looked spectacular and dominated the court easily; however, the lack of consistency due to illness and injury had an effect on the team and their results.

The end result was a seventh place tie.  Our battered girls held their heads high as they dragged themselves out of the Etobicoke gym!

Well done girls!

14U Girls Black

The 14U Tigers Black improved their game-play this weekend with a Silver Medal finish at the Ontario Challenge Cup played at Brock University in St. Catherines. In the first round of pool play, Tigers were defeated by Forest City Blue 21-25 and 17-25; however, the girls came back strong to defeat Toronto West in straight sets 25-17 and 25-14.  Capturing first in their pool, Tigers then defeated the Chatham Ballhawks Blue 22-25; 25-8 and 16-14 in an exciting offensive and defensive match.  In the crossover match, Tigers squared up against MAC, playing against them for the first time this year.  They handily defeated the team 25-14 and 25-19.  This important win ensured the girls a spot in the gold medal game against the Georgetown Impact where they lost 22-25 and 16-25. Congratulations on a well earned Silver Tigers.  We look forward to continued success at our next tournament on February 20th.

g14uopengoldmedalTigers Black 14U Win the Gold

On Saturday March 27th the Region of Waterloo VBC Tigers 14U Black Girls team competed in the Ontario Volleyball Association Open and came home victorious with a well earned and deserved Gold Medal.  Most of the girls turned in outstanding performances both as individuals and more importantly as a team.  We don’t know if we’ve spiked, blocked, served and dug balls as well as we did in this tournament.  This will go along with the Silver and Bronze Medals they previously won this season in the Championship West tournaments.  At this age category unfortunately there is no Premier Division for competition.  The team has shown they can compete with the Best of the Best in the province and now look forward to playing in the Ontario Provincial Championships to be held at RIM Park in Waterloo on Friday April 16th to Sunday April 18th.  The team will then be attending the Canadian National Championships in Sherbrooke , Quebec from May 6th to the 10th.

Congrats Team from Coaches Terry and Airy
